Speed Meter : Australian Based ISP Broadband download speed tester.

Test your download speed with this Free Australian Based ISP Broadband speed test. It will also remember your past tests. Great for seeing if you have had your download speed capped or shaped.

ADSL 2 Speeds

ADSL 2 speeds can range from 27000kbps (27Mb) down to a measly 64kpbs (64Kb). Many things can inhibit your speed two of the main factors in reduced speed are distance from the ADSL 2 enabled exchange and Quality of the copper wire between your residence and the exchange.

The most common speeds that this meter records is between 7000kbps (7Mb) and 8000kbps (8Mb) if you are getting more than this we would suggest you should be pretty happy. If you are getting less than this you should check that your modem/router is ADSL 2 Capbable if it is then we suggest you check with your ISP. ADSL 1 Modems have a maximum speed of 8000kbps (8Mb) so there is no way to get a faster speed out of them. Another common speed we see on this test is between 3000kbps (3Mb) and 4000kbps (4Mb). We rarely see speeds higher than 8000kbps (8Mb) though we do only test 1 stream it is possible that you could run 2 or 3 downloads at 8000kbps (8Mb) for each download.

ADSL 1 Speeds

Some common ADSL 1 speeds include 1.5Megabit, 512Kilobit, 256Kilobit and 64Kilobit. 64Kilobit seems to be the coomon speed for ISP's when they shape or cap your speed. The following speeds should get you average test rates as listed below.

1.5Mb with this connection speed you should get an average between 1400kbps and 1600kbps

512Kb with this connection speed you should get an average between 450kbps and 540kbps

256Kb with this connection speed you should get an average between 220kbps and 260kbps

64Kb with this connection speed you should get an average between 50kbps and 70kbps This is the common speed it seems ISP's hand out when they shape or cap your account for going over their download/upload limits.

Some uncommon ADSL Speeds are the following.

8Mb with this connection speed you should get an average between 7900kbps and 8100kbps

6Mb with this connection speed you should get an average between 5900kbps and 6100kbps

4Mb with this connection speed you should get an average between 3900kbps and 4100kbps

2Mb with this connection speed you should get an average between 1900kbps and 2100kbps

This Speed Meter is based in Brisbane Australia and can reach speeds of 100000kbps (100Mb) your speeds can be affected by dozens of different reasons a couple of the main ones are, you have been capped/shaped, you are downloading, windows is updating, a trojan is taking your bandwidth, some P2P network software is running in the background, you are receiving emails, your isp may have network congestion (usually happens around 3pm when school gets out and kids get online, and then after 7pm when people finish their dinner and get online)
